Recovering addicts have enough on their plate as it is. But most want something more, including fitness in recovery.

So how do you add fitness to your sober lifestyle without becoming overwhelmed or god forbid, switching to a fitness addiction?

Finding Time For Fitness

This part of life often feels like something which can be left for tomorrow. Truthfully, a lot of people don’t feel like they have time to spend hours at the gym each week. Myself included.

I know I needed to make time to exercise. If you are like me, you seem to be non-stop busy. Yet, since getting sober, you aren’t exactly looking the way you want to. Amiright?

In active addiction, I was skinny as can be. There is NO way I want to go back to being that thin. But I am NOT happy with the way I am at the moment.

It’s true, I am not running the streets 24/7 but, my toddlers keep me moving non-stop. Add in work and grocery runs, up and down the stairs doing laundry, and so on. When night falls, my old ass is out like a light.

Here’s the truth. In addiction, we were thin and malnourished. Not eating properly or taking care of our body as we should.

In sobriety, we eat. Maybe a little too much and while we still stay active. It isn’t targeting the right areas or burning enough calories. It is incredibly difficult to make sure that you’re treating your body correctly.

You need to find the time for your fitness. Despite the fact that you already feel like there is not enough time in the day. Keep reading to find some of the fastest ways to get your fix for fitness in recovery.

Whole Body Workouts

A lot of people like to keep their exercise and normal life completely separate. To make this work when you have a busy lifestyle, you need to find a routine which enables you to cover as much of your body as possible, without spending loads of time doing it.

You can find loads of useful guides at Juicing for Health to help you to start this sort of process, with loads of people posting their own ideas for workouts which don’t take very long at all.

Don’t get discouraged. Most people will need to try out a couple of different options. It may take a while to find a workout that you like.

The Commute

Of course, if you don’t have time in your day to dedicate to exercise, you have to take a slightly different approach. Thankfully, fitting exercise into other parts of your life isn’t too challenging. Especially if you are going to the same place each day. You have a schedule down and just need to mix it up a bit.

Replacing your daily commute with a cycle ride, walk, or run can be a great way to ensure that you’re getting enough workouts to keep yourself healthy. Do you know how many calories you would burn if you rode a bike to work instead of riding the bus? Or if it is too damn far to walk or cycle and you do take a bus, try walking to a bus stop a bit further away.

Watching TV

Not a lot of people will think about TV when they’re trying to add fitness into their lifestyle.

When you think about watching television, you don’t think fitness. You imagine lounging on the couch, watching Netflix, and eating a tub of Ben & Jerrys. It’s a part of your life you associate with laziness. But it does NOT have to be that way.

Exercise machines, like bikes and rowers, can be found all over the web for good prices. These tools will take up a little bit of space but will give you the chance to have a workout when you’re doing something else at the same time. Such as watching tv.

Believe it or not, if you are on an exercise bike and entranced in the latest episode of the Walking Dead, you will be exercising without even thinking about it. Or you can turn on the millions of exercise videos available on Netflix or OnDemand. Replace your TV time with a workout dance session. Why not?

Pre-Breakfast

Having a good breakfast is an important part of staying healthy. Yet, you don’t eat as soon as your eyes open. So, between waking up and eating,  you have a great window to get a little bit of exercise in before the day starts.

Actually, it is a GREAT way to burn calories and get your metabolism going hard.

A 20-minute run or cycle will have a huge impact on your metabolism if you do it before you eat. It will help you to get fitter much faster, while also improving weight loss. Of course, this isn’t exactly a quick workout in itself, but, rather, a time which can be used for this sort of activity.
