If you are on medicine, does that mean you relapsed?

Do yourself a favor and be prepared. Fear and panic will only make the situation worse.

Life Can Knock You Down

Yet, life has a way of dealing us unwelcome hands from time to time. Everything could be going fine. And then bam! Something happens that derails your life. It knocks you off track and you have to be ready to deal with the aftermath.

One such example is an injury.

Not only can an injury knock you down but, it also has the power to undo the progress you have made in recovery. Don’t let that happen to you.

In this post, I am giving you a few tips and coping skills to take care of yourself when you have an injury as a recovering addict. Specifically, so it doesn’t throw you back into the hell of addiction.

Own the Injury

Here is what I mean by saying OWN YOUR INJURY. It’s easy to let an injury overwhelm you. It comes out of nowhere and turns your life upside down.

So it’s definitely understandable that you could feel powerless against it. You can’t change it, it happened, and now you have to deal with it but, it the right way. In a healthy way.

See, here’s the thing. Your attitude is one of those things that you get to choose. Accept that you’re injured, and vow that it’s not going to bring you down.

You’d be amazed just how much of a difference a can-do mindset can have.

The Path to Recovery

One injury has the power to bring anyone down, especially if it seems to linger and linger and linger. You may be able to tolerate a week of sitting on the couch, but if you’re entering week three and you don’t seem to be making progress, then your resolve will begin to weaken. As such, it’s important that you have a plan of action when it comes to handling your injury. This could mean receiving initial treatment, having a period of rest, and then receiving further treatment from a rehabilitation facility. You’ll be able to tolerate the injury much better if you can see your path towards a healthy body open up before you.

Get Outside

At first, you may think that there’d be nothing better than spending a week or more doing nothing but watching Netflix in your pajamas. When you have to do it, you might find that not only is it less enjoyable than you imagined.

But isolating and constantly staying inside can have a negative effect on your mental health. Trust me, I know. I like being alone and it messed with me by raising my anxiety and anger issues.

Point being, while you may have to spend more time indoors than usual. Make sure that if possible, you’re taking the time to get outside a little, too. Thirty means sat outside will do you a world of good.

Pain Management

This is a controversial topic which only strengthens the stigma of addiction recovery. So, what I am going to say is nothing more than my personal opinion. If you feel otherwise, that’s fine.

If you have a serious injury as a recovering addict, I’m talking major surgery, broken bones, and in a hell of a lot of pain the, pain medication may be necessary.

If you are a recovering opiate addict then this could be a bit of a problem for you. First and foremost, talk to your doctor about it. Tell him the situation and ask his opinion.

Second, ask about taking non-opioid medications. They will still relieve pain but don’t have the same addictive qualities as say oxy’s or percocets.

Third. If that isn’t working or you have NO other option but to take narcotic pain medication then, take it as prescribed. If you are serious about your recovery, you will take ALL medicines as prescribed.

If you really don’t trust yourself then ask for help. Seriously, have someone you trust to administer the medicine. This way you can’t take more than you should, sell anyway, or potentially overdose.

Don’t Isolate

If there’s one thing that can see us through our low moments, it’s our friends! Not only that but when you need time to recover and are alone more often than usual, there is a downside.

And that downside is that you will have more time to be in your head. That is not always a good thing for a recovering addict. Usually, it’s never a good thing.

When you have an injury as a recovering addict and are cooped up inside. That terrain becomes a breeding ground for unwelcome thoughts.

You can take the edge off by talking with your friends before your mind begins to wander too much. Take an hour just talking to someone about all the good things that you have to look forward to when you’re better.

If seeing your friends in person is not an option, you can always get online. Or keep your mind busy by reading, writing, journaling, drawing, and being productive when you are not resting.

Suffering From An Injury As A Recovering Addict

Living a sober life can be difficult at times. Especially, when you are in a situation such as having a serious injury as a recovering addict.

Just remember, you have come too far in recovery to let an injury throw you back into the grips of addiction.

Use your coping skills combined with the tips above and you will be able to deal with your injury as a recovering addict in a healthy way,

Don’t let your injury be an excuse to fall back into opiate addiction. You are better than that and you have worked too damn hard to overcome it.
