Let’s get straight to it. Here are 6 changes to make in sobriety so you can have the whole package. Sobriety, a healthy body, a clear mind, happiness, and freedom.

You got sober so you can better yourself and your life. Amiright?!

The years of active use took a toll on our bodies and we got a lot of damage to reverse. The thing is that drugs and drinking didn’t only annihilate your physical health but it destroyed your mental health as well.

If you want to live a happpier healthier lifestyle then you got to be ready to make more than a few crucial changes.

Will it be easy? Probably, not.

But…will it be worth it? Absolutely.

When you make the choice to better yourself after addiction recovery, it is best to take it slow. Sobriety is a total lifestyle change and you must be able to handle the obstacles you will face in a healthy manner.

Your mind is just as important as your body when it comes to overall health and well-being. So to make the change as easy as possible, I am going to share with you some of the simple ways that you can keep your body and mind healthy.

These are necessary changes to make in sobriety for you to enjoy an overall great sober lifestyle. Making these changes in sobriety can even reduce things like anxiety and depression from playing a major role in your life.

Remember, take it slow, do research, create a schedule and develop new healthy habits that are good for both your mind and body.

So enough chit chat, let’s dive in. Here are several necessary changes to make in sobriety so you can thrive in a sober healthy lifestyle.

#1. No Drugs or Alcohol

Obviously, this is a given. To have a sober lifestyle, you must be sober. To have a healthy lifestyle, you must be sober.

Without a doubt, you know that drinking and drugging are not good for your body and causes a lot of physical issues. (I don’t want to hear the shit about a glass of wine a day is great for your health and weed is natural so it’s good for you. Give me a break and don’t even go there. Please and thank you.)

Now back to the point, drugs and alcohol are not only physically bad for you but they are also extremely unhealthy for your mind.

For example, alcohol and heroin are both depressants. So they can cause a lot of issues for someone who suffers from things like depression or anxiety. Drugs trigger this type of feeling and make them even worse.

Wait a minute, it gets worse…then better.

If you aren’t sober yet, It’s important to know that going through detox will suck. Especially when detoxing from alcohol or opiates. In the beginning, your body will experience things like frequent urination and weight gain. Giving up alcohol and drugs is not easy and it takes many of us so damn long to get clean because we don’t want to experience the withdrawal symptoms.

Withdrawal is agonizing and feels as if it lasts forever. Each drug including alcohol has it’s own symptoms and each person’s experience will be different.

Personally, I have witnessed women running around non-stop, sweating, and puking while going through opiate withdrawal. Then, I have seen women coming off of alcohol and suboxone laying in their own vomit and feces unable to move.

In cases such as that, medical professionals are necessary and they’ll recommend things like incontinence supplies such as pads that you can be used on a daily basis.

After going through this, your body will slowly improve and you will feel much better. If you ever think about relapsing, remember moments like these.

#2. Eating a balanced diet

Food plays a major role in health and wellness. Not only for the body but for the mind as well.

There are certain foods that your body needs to be in tip-top shape. Fast food and sugar do not fulfill those needs. There are food changes to make in sobriety that will allow you to thrive in the healthy lifestyle you want. Hence, why you need to eat a balanced diet.

And no, a diet does not mean starving yourself. It means cutting out the food and drinks that are not good for your body.

You have tons of options. From clean eating to the keto diet. Maybe becoming vegan or simply cutting out sugar is what you need.

#3. Meditation

There are many physical and mental health benefits to meditation that have been proven over the years.

So if you’re finding that your life is particularly stressful. Or that you would just like a way to relax, then meditation is definitely something worth trying.

For starters, there is no right or wrong way to meditate. If you have no clue where to begin or how to meditate then make it simple. Google or search YouTube for guided meditations and you will find something that fits your needs.

There are guided meditations for things like not being able to sleep or even find a beginner’s meditation. I even posted a video below so you can get see for yourself.

It’s a great way to clear your mind, regain control, and refocus your negative feelings.

#4. Say Bye-Bye To Toxic People

This was a lifestyle change that was extremely hard for me to make personally. But when you know that something isn’t good for you then, you need to get rid of it.

The people you associate yourself with have a major influence on your life whether you think so or not. Their words and actions personally affect you. Plus, outsiders can get a wrong impression of you based on those people.

I chose to stay away from the people I got high with. I knew that if I didn’t, I would fall right back into addiction and I didn’t want that.

Still after being sober for years, there were toxic people in my family. Not people who used but their words and actions were negative all the time.

The truth is you can’t change someone or make someone see the error of their ways. All you can do is move on and eliminate the toxicity from your life. Once you establish clear boundaries then, maybe that person will see what you were seeing.

If not, you are still better off. That’s just the way it got to be.

#5. Regular exercise:

We all know that getting regular exercise is something that’s important for a healthy lifestyle.

Even if it’s just a 20 minute run per day or dancing around your house for an hour while cleaning. It’s better than not doing anything. Especially if you’re sitting for long periods throughout the day.

Make sure that you’re getting regular exercise and staying active. Not only for your physical health but for your mental health too.

#6. Consistent Therapy

Seeing a therapist does not mean you are a certified whack job. Everyone needs someone to talk to.

Think about it like this. You need someone to talk to. Someone you can vent to, share your feelings, worries, and concerns. Not every adult has this in their personal life.

A therapist can give their opinion, without feeling a personal connection. They are a qualified outsider looking in. It’s feedback that you can’t get anywhere else.

I enjoy my therapy sessions. I always leave my session with a different perspective than I had when I arrived. It helps me to grow and make changes that I would never have been aware of if I didn’t have that person to point it out to me.

Plus, you receive information different from a therapist than say your bff or mother-in-law. I don’t know about you but if my MIL gave me constructive criticism on my parenting, I would get pissed. It would be my gut reaction. Yet, If I shared the same scenario with my therapist, I would take her advice to heart because I know there is no spite involved.

If you truly don’t want to see a therapist, you still need to vent and get your feelings and thoughts out of your head. For that, I recommend journaling. It’s the best form of self therapy there is.

As you grow, stay sober, and take action, your new lifestyle will fall into place.

Each of these changes you make will become a habit. From exercising and eating healthy to meditating and journaling. Each and every one of these changes that you have implemented has now become a good habit.

You eat the right foods, run daily, go to the gym twice a week, meditate each morning and then write in your journal without thinking twice. It becomes natural. It becomes part of your routine.

When that happens, the change is official. It is now part of your lifestyle which is exactly what you want.

  1. Yes, yes, yes to all of these! Especially getting rid of toxic people. I think that can sometimes be the most difficult because some people may not understand why you want to live sober. They may still be in denial about their own addiction and seeing someone else be strong and make a big decision about their health can leave them feeling conflicted about their own issues.
