Most people think that writing down their dreams, thoughts, hopes, and values is purely a waste of time.

Yet, it is a FACT that people who write down their goals and plans are much more likely to achieve them. Writing it down is almost a form of validation that this WILL happen.

What is A Life Vision?

Corbett Bar defines a life vision down to a t.

Goals are individual experiences and accomplishments you strive for.

A vision is the bigger picture. Your life’s vision defines who you want to be, what you want to be known for and the set of experiences and accomplishments you aim for.

There is not a more perfect way to explain it. Plus, he added in the difference between long term goals and a vision. Double win.

What is A Sober Life Vision?

Once you are sober and actually begin to have some significant clean time under your belt, you begin to change.

Your body begins to heal.

Your mind begins to heal.

Now, you have thoughts about what could be. Dreams about what you will accomplish.

To put it simply, a sober life vision is pretty much the same thing as a life vision. But of course, the vision revolves around your sobriety and your ability to maintain being sober.

More often than not, recovering addicts have a bit more on their plate than the average joe. A person indulged in heroin addiction for a decade is a bit different than a person who just got out of college starting his career.

Our pasts our different, there are more obstacles to overcome, bridges to build, and healing to do.

All that it really means is you have to work that much harder and have a crystal clear vision of what you need to do.

Your Sobriety Is Key

The truth is, without your sobriety, a successful future is not possible and that’s just keeping it real.

You got sober beacuse something was wrong. You weren’t happy with how things were going or the direction you were heading.

What is it you want out of life?

You fought to get sober so you could turn your life around. But for what? Why do you want to stay sober? What does the vision of your future look like?

Your life vision revolves around and quite frankly, DEPENDS ON your ability to stay sober. If you can’t stay sober, your vision is lost.

How Your Life Vision Will Be Your Guide

Now sober, you have to deal with ALL the wreckage of the past. Including all the shit you avoided and let pile up during your addiction. Not to mention, criminal records, financial issues, and all of that not so fun stuff.

The good news is that once you create a powerful sober life vision, it will guide you in creating the life you want.

This is how…

#1. Motivation To Stay Sober

I’m guessing you got clean because your life wasn’t going quite the way you had hoped. Maybe, you hit rock bottom and you knew without a doubt that your life was shit due to your addiction.

So you got clean. As you got more clean time, your life began to change for the better. Now, you have hopes, dreams, and a vision of the future.

When you look at both sides of it. Your life in addiction and your life in recovery, which is better?

That vision of yours will motivate you to stay sober so you can accomplish everything you want and then some.

#2. Direction

It’s simple.

If you don’t now where you are going or what you want, your likely to go nowhere. Or even worse, resort back to what you do know.

Since you are a recovering addict, resorting back to what you do know is NOT a good thing.

After creating your vision, you have direction. You know where you are going and what you want.

#3. Foundation

The first step in creating the sober life you want is to lay the foundation. In this case, your foundation is your vision.

It’s the starting point for your life plan, the routines you have, and your entire strategy to achieve your goals.

#4. Easier To Make A Plan

You know what you want and where you want to be. So, now it’s time to fill in the holes and begin building. To do that, you need to have a plan. A detailed plan.

Include long term goals, short term goals. Every single thing you must do in order to successfully fulfill your life vision.

#5. Crystal Clear Clarity

A vision gives you the opportunity to get real with yourself and dream big.

You know what you are capable of and if you take the time to plan it all out and be consistent then you will succeed.

When building your dream life, it will be much easier and clear. You will know exactly what to focus on. All that you will have to do is take appropriate action.

Things To Consider

There are certain things that come into play when creating your own vision.

You need to think about the following when creating yours:

  • Values
  • Beliefs
  • Dreams
  • Needs and Wants
  • Skills
  • Personal feelings
  • Education level

Take all of this into consideration as you focus on each area of your life vision.

Different Parts of Your Vision

There are specific areas that NEED to be a part of your grand vision. Here are a few to give you an idea.

  • Career
  • Education
  • Home Life
  • Relationships
  • Parenting
  • Sobriety

What you need to do is put all of the things mentioned above (feelings, skills, dreams, beliefs, etc) into each area of your vision.

Once you have a clear vision of how you want every area of your life to be. Then, you put it all together to create the final masterpiece.

Vision Workbook vs Vision Board

For this monumental moment in your life, I truly don’t feel that a vision board will do.

It’s not that I think vision boards are invaluable. It’s simply that to create a clear, powerful, thorough vision for your future in recovery, a vision board won’t cut it.

Download the Vision Workbook. Print it out. Write it down. Keep it safe. Read over it as often as you can.

If you are a visual person and want to make a vision board. Then I suggest that you create a vision for the specific goals in your life. Not the vision for your entire future.

Use Your Sober Life Vision

We have discussed how creating a life vision will lay the foundation for you to plan a kick-ass sober life. So take full advantage of EVERYTHING your vision can provide for you.

Creating your vision is the first step and the rest will follow as long as you take action. It’s not magic. You can’t write it down, never look at it again, and wonder why your dream life isn’t coming true.

Remember this is the beginning. Only you can choose what your future is made of and it’s up to you to get there.

Don’t leave without downloading your free Sober Vision Workbook.

  1. Thank you for sharing this! I want and need to get my shit together. I lost the motivation and the desire to do much after the loss of my loved one on March 8th. I’ve maintained my recovery.. Besides staying clean, I’ve managed to get myself out of my bedroom and out of my house too, after focusing on healing from grief, and overcoming depression again. I’m going to print out your free workbook – I’ve been trying all sorts of things to get myself back into action. I’ll email you soon so we can catch up. Sending you love & light. XO

    • Lucille,

I was thinking about you. I hope you’re feeling better. That was a traumatic loss for you. Know that I’m always here to talk. Hope to hear from you soon. xo
