Are you planning a sober vacation? If this is your first time going on a trip while being in recovery, you need to be prepared.

You need to stay safe.

Not only do you need to stay away from alcohol and drugs but, there are other elements that come into play to ensure you have a stress free, relaxing sober vacation.

Any little thing can stress you out and send you into relapse. Don’t let that happen.

Leaving Your Comfort Zone

You are going on vacation to relax. But in all honesty, until you get to your destination, life can get more than a little hectic.

Not to mention you are leaving your comfort zone, your safe place. When you get upset or something happens that makes your anxiety levels skyrocket, being in a familiar place is security.

In your own home, you know exactly what to do and where to go to calm down. Being in a foreign place, doesn’t afford you that luxury.

So the best thing for you to do is to play it safe on your sober vacation. While having fun and enjoying yourself should be your main priority. It’s vital you’re doing absolutely everything you can to ensure your trip is as safe as it can possibly be.

Here are 6 simple things that you can do to ensure your sober vacation is safe, stress-free, and enjoyable. Just as it should be.

6 Tips To Make Sure Your Sober Vacation Runs Smoothly

Here are a few vacation essentials that I don’t go on a trip without.

Tip #1 – Keep All Of Your Important Documents Safe

One of the worst things that can happen when you’re traveling is that you lose your important travel documents. Whether it’s your passport or your visa. Obviously, you need these to get into certain countries. So, you need to make sure they’re as safe as possible.

The best way to do this is to buy a document wallet and keep absolutely everything of importance in there. This is my absolute favorite one and I got it for my very first sober vacation and now use it as my everyday wallet. I absolutely love it.

When you’re moving on to a new destination, double check and even triple check your wallet. Make sure that you have the wallet in a secure place and that everything is inside of it.

Tip #2 – Do Your Research

This is obvious. You need to plan your vacation. Especially a sober vacation. You wouldn’t want to go to KeyWest in the middle of spring break when alcohol is your drug of choice. Or you don’t want to go to Europe and stay right next to an opium den. You get what I’m saying?

When picking your hotel in the place you want to go, you may be looking at price and location mainly. But it’s also important to look at what places are going to be safe.

The accommodation website won’t tell you whether or not it’s safe. Yet, the reviews that have been left on sites like Tripadvisor definitely will. Do as much research as you can before booking somewhere.

Reach out to others who have been to the area if you can’t find any relevant information. Ask friends and people in recovery where they like to go on sober vacation.

If you’re really unsure, look for somewhere that does have good reviews.

Tip #3 – Stay Sober

When you’re on vacation, it can be super easy to get carried away and do what everyone else is doing. Although it may seem fun and adventurous, it’s important you’re staying away from harmful substances that could hurt you. Or wipe your sober time right off the map.

Why would you want to do that when you have worked so damn hard to get where you are?

Don’t think that a relapse don’t count because you are on vacation. It does.

Tip #4 – Travel Insurance

Although it would be great to think you can stop things from happening when you’re traveling, some issues are simply unavoidable.

Whether it’s coming down with a sickness bug or getting caught up in bad weather, having travel insurance is the best way to ensure you’re not out of pocket at the end of your trip.

Most yearly plans are extremely affordable and they can save you a lot of money should something terrible happen on your vacation.

Tip #5 – Let Other’s Know Where You’re Going

Another important thing to consider is letting others know where you’re going. Even if you want to make it a secret rendezvous to get away from people. You should let at least one person know where you are going to be.

Maybe I watch too much ID tv but crazy shit happens. What better victim than an unsuspecting woman on vacation in an unfamiliar place?

Whether you’re traveling in a group or you’re on your own, it’s important for you to someone who is not on your trip know where you are supposed going, your hotel room number and address, and when you are going to return home.

You can easily send it to your bff using your Google calendar or write it on a freaking napkin. Having someone aware of where you’re going to be on vacation will help, should anything go wrong.

I know it’s not something that you want to think about. But it is good to be prepared in this situation. Better safe than sorry, right?

Tip #6 – Be Smart With Your Money

Finally, it’s important you’re being as smart as you possibly can with your money.

Make sure you’re only withdrawing money from reliable banks, or that you’re using a travel card from a reputable country.

If you’re purchasing something with cash, double check the change you are given as often vendors will try to short change you if you’re not familiar with the currency.

If you’re traveling with lots of cash, ensure it is kept locked in a safe or on your person at all times.

My personal advice is to set a budget and do not go over it. Only use one credit card for purchases. Pay for your room ahead of time. Include food in your budget.

And please keep in mind that an impulse purchase is usually not a good idea and how many souvenirs do you really need?

These 6 tips will keep your sober vacation flawless and fun. Yet, here are a few more things that you might want to consider to amp it up just a bit more.

  • Pack a capsule wardrobe so you lessen your load and still have a multitude of choices.
  • Get outdoors, don’t sit in your hotel room or a spa the entire time.
  • Before you go, consider adding gift purchases to your budget and don’t go over it. You’ll thank yourself later.
  • Make sure you have a cell phone charger.
