Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but, it does NOT have a damn thing to do with ANY of that stuff.
So, If I tell you what’s really going on. Does that mean you can quit smoking cold turkey? That you have found the secret sauce to breaking nicotine addiction?
Umm. No, the chances that you are one of those people who can quit smoking cold turkey is slim to none and I don’t think you should try.

Smoking is A Drug Addiction

It is hard to believe that smoking used to be endorsed by doctors. Crazy, isn’t it? The benefits of using tobacco were advertised. Someone got their head on straight and those days are long gone. Now everyone is aware of how bad smoking cigarettes, chewing tobacco, and nicotine addict really is.
It is becoming increasingly unpopular. Smoking is being banned in public places. People do not want to suffer from second-hand smoke when they do not use cigarettes themselves.
In 1964 about half the population of the US smoked, now that figure has dropped to below 20%.
Research has shown that most of the reduction is because not so many people start smoking in the first place but there are also many that have managed to quit the habit, some with no help from anyone or anything at all. They quit smoking cold turkey like they never had an addiction to begin with.

Quit Smoking Cold Turkey Or Not?
Most experts agree that you are more likely to fail if you try to quit smoking cold turkey.
In fact, it is estimated that only between 3% and 5% of those who try to quit smoking cold turkey manage never to smoke a cigarette again.
There are quit-smoking aids available. Nicotine replacement therapy, prescription medications, counseling and vaping are all things that can help you to quit smoking. Smokers who use these aids to quit are more likely to succeed than smokers who quit cold turkey.
The medical profession will do everything they can to encourage you to stop smoking, but sometimes it is a case of finding which aid suits you the best.
Don’t Quit Smoking Cold Turkey – You Have Options
There are several nicotine replacements on the market.
You can even use more than one kind of nicotine replacement medication. Multiple types can be prescribed at a time depending on your needs and your doctors’ recommendations. Such as nicotine gum and the patch.

This means you have many options and will hopefully find one that helps you to kick the habit.
What Is Fatty Acid Amide Hydrolase (FAAH)
Fatty acid amide hydrolase is the reason why some people can quit smoking cold turkey and the rest of us, simply can’t.
This is an enzyme that can reduce the level of anandamide in our brain. Not to get too technical, basically, about 20% of the population have a mutated gene that means they are a lot less susceptible to addictions of any sort. They also tend to be calmer and happier people who cope with stress really well.
Nicotine can boost the feel-good molecules artificially, which is why people often feel so low when they are trying to quit smoking. And let’s be completely honest with ourselves. No one likes feeling like shit, physically, mentally, or emotionally. You and I will keep doing what it is that makes us feel better, or less stressed.

Ardent smokers, who are desperate to quit, often find it hard to understand how someone can enjoy a cigarette occasionally and not suffer any of the longings or withdrawal symptoms when they then go without for a while.
Smoking in Moderation
Believe it or not, many social smokers are actually “past” or “former” smokers, who are also referred to as “chippers”. (I have never head that term before until recently lol)
These kinds of social smokers find that it is ok to smoke an occasional cigarette. I guess having one is easier to cope with than having none at all. So, you could call it smoking in moderation.
At first, I found this concept rather hard to believe but, the more I thought about it and read about it, it works. Seriously, think about it. Some people only smoke when they drink. And if you only drink socially then, you only smoke socially.
Not to mention, peer pressure is a bitch. It doesn’t matter how old you are. If your friends are doing it then chances are, so will you.
Yet keep in mind, smoking isn’t really the “cool” thing to do anymore. Less and less people are smoking according to the statistics. People will feel so uncomfortable smoking around other people, that the opportunity to enjoy a cigarette will become less and less.
I’m a smoker and if I go to a relatives house that doesn’t smoke, I don’t smoke. Not even outside because it makes me feel awkward. Or when I’m at a function for my children. If no other mothers are smoking then, there isn’t a chance in hell that I’m going to light one up.
Successfully Stop Smoking
If you really want to quit smoking, there is nothing brave in trying to do it alone without any help, as you will probably fail. Don’t think for one second that I am saying you are weak or that you can’t do something.
It’s the simple fact that your brain is wired a certain way.
For some, who have that special mutated gene, being able to stop smoking is no big deal. For the rest of us, not so easy.
My suggestion is this. Look into the different forms of help and be successful to stop smoking. Whatever you do, don’t give up. It will kill you and if you wait until you are diagnosed with lung cancer, throat cancer, CPD, or have to use an oxygen machine then, it’s too late.
Everyone recovers from addiction in their OWN way. Overcoming nicotine addiction is nothing different. Find the way that works best for you.
